Clear Lens Exchange

Clear Lens Exchange
There is another exciting option for individuals over 45 who are considering vision correction and have been told that they’re not a candidate for LASIK. It’s called Clear Lens Exchange – or CLE for short.

CLE is well suited for people over 45 because that is the age that most people begin to lose their ability to focus up close. This occurs when the natural lens becomes less flexible, and no longer accommodates as well to changing its focus from distant to near objects. It is then that reading glasses or bifocals are prescribed.

CLE also known as Clear Lens Extraction, Refractive Lensectomy, Presbyopic Lens Exchange (PreLex), or Refractive Lens Exchange, is essentially the same procedure as cataract surgery. However, CLE is preformed prior to the development of cataracts for the refractive benefits.

Unlike LASIK or PRK that correct vision by reshaping the cornea, CLE corrects your vision by changing the focusing power of the eye’s lens. To do this, we replace your natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens implant (IOL) to achieve clearer eyesight. Some IOLs used in CLE have a fixed focal length and do not accommodate for near vision. In our experience, most patients want a full range of vision. That is why Dr. Bryan prefers the FDA-approved AcrySof® ReSTOR® implant which allows the recipient to enjoy clear distance and near vision without the need for reading glasses or bifocals.

Because the CLE procedure involves a lens placed inside the eye, the focusing problems of presbyopia are corrected permanently for a majority of our patients. The ReSTOR® implant is permanent and will never need to be replaced. Since your lens has been replaced with an artificial one that never clouds, patients who have CLE preformed will never develop cataracts nor will they ever require cataract surgery in the future.

Cataract Surgery Using ReSTOR

Cataract Surgery Using ReSTOR®

Many people do not realize that cataract surgery can be a form of refractive surgery (vision correction). In addition to being used in Clear Lens Exchange (CLE), ReSTOR® can be effectively used in cataract surgery.

Cataract surgery remains the most frequently performed surgery in the U.S. and is one of the safest as well. So, the surgery itself remains the same — only the lens technology has improved.

In the past, life without reading glasses or bifocals was simply not an option for cataract patients after surgery. Thankfully, advancements in lens technology have taken a giant leap forward. The goal is no longer just to treat your cataract and restore distance vision; but to provide a full range of vision with minimal use of either reading glasses or bifocals for near vision. The recently FDA-approved AcrySof® ReSTOR® intraocular lens (IOL) is a landmark vision care technology that may restore a full range of vision for people who have cataracts and presbyopia.

The ReSTOR® lens is a breakthrough treatment option. It combines the safety and successful outcomes of traditional cataract surgery with new technology that gives you a full range of vision — near through distance — so you can regain your visual freedom.

Procedure Information

About The Procedure

Whether having Clear Lens Exchange or Cataract Surgery one eye is done at a time approximately a week apart. Before the procedure, your eye is carefully measured by taking a corneal topography (map) and using state-of-the-art ultrasound instruments. These measurements are entered into a sophisticated formula to calculate the exact corrective power of your intraocular lens.

Dr Bryan will perform this virtually painless surgery with no injections at all, only numbing eyedrops. You will return home to rest after surgery without an eye patch. Steroid, antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops are given to you for comfort, safety and rapid healing. In fact, most ReSTOR® patients are able to get back to their normal activities the very next day.

It may take you some time to get accustomed to your new vision. Many patients may see better within 1 to 2 weeks or less and almost always continues improving for the next 4 to 6 weeks. Always consult with one of our staff members if you have any questions or concerns as a result of surgery.
